PVA filaments

PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) is a soluble support filament that has an important role in 3D printing. When printing objects with larger, sloping angles, support filaments provide support and prevent bad overhangs. PVA is a popular support filament which fully dissolves in water within 24 hours, leaving the printed object intact and without damage. This material has similar printing properties to PLA which makes them a good match.

PVA is most commonly used with 3D printers with a double extruder, where one head prints basic material (e.g. PLA, PETG or ABS), while the other is printing the PVA material to provide support at all major angles where otherwise basic material would be.  After printing, insert the product into lukewarm water and within 12-24 hours, the PVA material will dissolve, leaving your base material and a wonderful product.

Printing recommendations:

  • For the best results, print at 190–210°C.
  • Recommended printing table temperature is 50–160°C.
  • Use a glass bed, PEI sheet, Kapton, or Blue tape for the build platform with 3Dlac spray.

*Ideal temperature may vary when using different printers.
