In FDM 3D printing, choosing the right material for your project is essential. However, since there are so many materials, it is often difficult to know which one will be the best for your project. Thus, if you are creating something intended for outdoor use, ASA filament is undoubtedly the right choice for you. This material is one of the best for outdoor projects as it has excellent weather resistance and UV stability. In addition to being known for its exceptional resistance to weather factors, ASA also has great mechanical properties. Read this blog to find out why ASA is the best choice for outdoor 3D projects.
ASA filament: The best 3D printing material for outdoor projects
UV and weather resistance
ASA or Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate is designed for outdoor use and does not deform like other materials such as PLA or PETG. UV resistance is certainly one of the most outstanding features that prevents ASA products from yellowing, cracking or losing strength. In addition to UV resistance, this material is resistant to moisture, chemicals and higher temperatures.
If your ASA product is exposed to the sun, rain and other weather influences for a long period of time, it will remain solid and retain its original shape and appearance.
Mechanical strength and durability
In addition to good weather resistance, ASA filaments are also very mechanically capable. This means they are impact-resistant, giving durability that lasts.
Aesthetic and functional versatility
The last advantage that makes this material perfect for outdoor projects is its smooth and glossy surface. ASA products are already very beautiful after printing, but you can of course further improve them with post-treatment such as polishing with acetone.
Most popular applications for ASA filament
As already mentioned, this material is suitable for a wide range of outdoor applications. Here are the most common ones:
Automotive components
One of the most common uses of ASA is certainly the automotive industry. It is used to make grilles, side mirrors, custom parts, bumper covers and more.
Protective guards and covers
Most industrial premises need to protect their machines, equipment, and specific parts from contact with people or weather factors.
Garden tools
Many 3D enthusiasts who also enjoy gardening have printed planters, supports, pipes, garden tools and accessories.
Outdoor signs
Because ASA products do not deform outdoors, this material is great for a variety of directional or informational signs.
Outdoor furniture
Outdoor furniture, lamps, decorations and other items that spend time on your outdoor patio can be made from ASA, as they will survive the extremes of winter and summer temperatures.
Best practices for printing with ASA filament
Standard ASA filaments are usually printed at a temperature of 240-260°C. However, the ideal temperature depends on the printer you are printing on. The recommended temperature of the heating table is 90-120°C. This material can be printed without an enclosure, but we strongly recommend using one or an enclosed 3D printer. Use a glass plate, PEI film, Kapton or blue tape and 3Dlac for the build surface.
However, we decided to create the ASA Prime collection because the 3D printing industry is developing rapidly and the need for new and better materials is constantly increasing. This advanced version of ASA filament offers you superior strength, impact resistance, excellent adhesion between layers and absolutely no bending during printing.
Printing recommendations for ASA Prime:
- For the best results, print at 235–255°C*.
- Recommended printing bed temperature is 80-100°C. We recommend using an enclosure or enclosed 3D printer, though this material can be printed without an enclosure.
- We highly recommend using the thick and textured PEI sheets/glass, as the rigidity and strength of ASA Prime require the weight and/or magnetic pull of a high-quality printing bed.
*Ideal temperature may vary when using different printers.
To conclude, ASA Prime will provide you with even better mechanical skills you can test on your upcoming projects.
